Hocking Hills

Though I had been promising Charlie and Melissa, that I would visit their new home, only the temptation of computers and more importantly sight-seeing at Hocking Hills motivated me to actually drive to Athens, OH. So Katherine and I drove to Athens early Friday morning, and found Charlie at home about noon. The three of us then proceeded to uptown Athens and bought some burritos on our way to Hocking Hills State Park. We spent the next 5 hours walking around Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Old Man's Cave and Conkel's Hollow. Each site is unique and impressive, and perhaps due to the surrounding foliage they all seem hidden and unexpected. Conkel's Hollow seems the most surreal of the sites we explored. Deep green landscape covers the rich, dark soil and as you walk from an unassuming field you progress into a deep gorge, which closes in from above. Finally, only a sliver of light makes its way into the gorge, where a delicate waterfall drops from above to feed a creek on the gorge floor.
After hours of exploration we were each hungry and tired and made our way back to Charlie and Melissa's house, where we ate Chinese food from a local restaurant. By this time it was getting dark and we drove into town to commandeer some computers for the return trip. Katherine spent the night with her friend, David, while Charlie and I played with computers. Very late in the night Charlie and I finally gave in to sleep. Charlie, Melissa and I woke the next morning and had some excellent fried chicken from Miller's Chicken. College towns such as Athens usually make me feel a bit nauseous either due to the demography or the diversity of industry. I would rather be in a larger city or more rural space. Anyway, the three of us went shopping at a local bulk food store before meeting Katherine at Charlie's house to load the car and return to Cincinnati.
Katherine and I thought about which route to follow home. We decided the Great Serpent Mound of Peebles, Ohio was the most interesting thing to see on the return trip, and so took SR-32. We drove through Pike Lake State Park and then proceeded west to SR-73, where the serpent mound sits overlooking the Brush Creek Valley. Despite arriving 10 minutes after the official closing time, the guard allowed us to park and peruse the site, as long as we departed within 20 minutes. Near the mound is a man-made watch-tower from where the entire serpent mound can be seen. Perhaps it is the season or the fresh manicure of the mound, but the intensity of color and precision of the sculpture was moving. Though it is a simple monument, it is one definitely worth seeing.

Also, Charlie, can you bring the OS 10.2 discs this week for the iMac cluster?
|
Charlie @ 2006.10.18 2214
| |
I'm pretty sure they run 10.3 without any issue. Any particular reason for 10.2?
|
Fuse @ 2006.10.18 2315

I want them to be as fast as possible... should I go with 10.3?

I hear 10.3 is better for your unnecessary power consumption.

but you didn't actually drive, adam. i drove the whole way.

She has a new car, but it is making a weird noise as well...

I'd get that noise checked out before you drive the car again. You never know, it could be as simple as something not being tight enough.

I was in the car and nothing sounded out of the ordinary. It was said to be a high pitched noise at high speeds... Perhaps it will present itself again.

Another one? She has only had 2 new cars. She sold the neon for the white Outback wagon, and then sold the white wagon for the burgandy Outback wagon, with 2 sunroofs.
Hey are you going to ride with me this weekend, Bremer? Give me a call after 6 Friday night...

The G3 has been locking up and acting flaky.
I suspect it could be do to both the crappy video card and the suspect RAM?
What do you think? Run it without the RAM, then try a new video card?... other ideas?

Try pulling ram one at a time first. That 512 that it thinks is a 256 would be the first to try. It's just PC100 but it is kind of picky about it.
That video card is really old and really crappy, that would be the next thing to try. If it is freezing the screen (rather than kernel panicing) that would more possibly be the video card.

Have we lost our group computing philosophy here at decavirate? We don't have to nerd-it-up like these guys, but shouldn't we be getting working on something as a group again...?
Maybe we should combine rollers and web-pagin'?
|
Ned @ 2006.10.26 2005
| |
Web-pagin usually consists of placing structure mobilization on your resume.
Is the contact portion still around? leaves are better than mud. leaves aren't bad at all actually. except for making the trail hard to see. and the roots. and stumps and bumps. hmm.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do... As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Does this mean that you're coming out?
